The European Data Science Journal (EDSJ) is an international, open-access, peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to publishing high-quality original research in data science, analytics, and data-driven innovation. JOURNAL HISTORY
The European Data Science Journal was established in 2023 by ESA Research in response to the growing demand for a dedicated, high-quality open-access venue for data science research. The journal published its inaugural issue in the fourth quarter of 2023 (October–December 2023) and has since grown to publish research from authors across multiple continents. Since its founding, EDSJ has been committed to rapid turnaround, rigorous peer review, and global accessibility, and has achieved indexing in Scopus (Elsevier), DOAJ, CrossRef, Google Scholar, and other major academic databases.

ARTICLE PROCESSING CHARGES (APCs) AND WAIVER POLICY
To sustain high publication standards — including peer review management, editorial processing, professional typesetting, DOI registration via CrossRef, and long-term digital archiving — EDSJ levies an Article Processing Charge (APC) upon formal acceptance of a manuscript. No charge is applied at submission, and authors are only invoiced after peer review and editorial acceptance.

WAIVER AND DISCOUNT POLICY:
EDSJ is committed to ensuring that financial constraints do not prevent the publication of high-quality research. Full or partial APC waivers are available for:
— Authors from low- and lower-middle-income countries (as classified by the World Bank)
— Manuscripts of exceptional significance submitted from resource-limited settings
— Authors experiencing documented financial hardship
To apply for a waiver, authors must submit a waiver request to the editorial office at the time of manuscript submission. Requests are evaluated on a case-by-case basis and are granted at the discretion of the Editor-in-Chief. Waiver decisions do not influence the editorial or peer review process.
SPONSORSHIP AND FUNDING DISCLOSURE:
EDSJ does not receive direct funding from any government body, commercial sponsor, or advertiser. The journal is self-sustaining through APCs. No third-party commercial interest influences editorial decisions, the selection of manuscripts for publication, or the content of published articles.

PEER REVIEW POLICY
EDSJ employs a rigorous double-blind peer review process in which neither the authors nor the reviewers know each other's identities. All submitted manuscripts meeting initial editorial screening criteria are evaluated by a minimum of two independent expert reviewers in the relevant field.
REVIEW WORKFLOW:
1. INITIAL EDITORIAL SCREENING — The Editor-in-Chief or a designated Associate Editor reviews the submission for scope, originality, language quality, ethical compliance, and adherence to journal formatting standards. Manuscripts not meeting minimum requirements may be desk-rejected at this stage without external review.
2. PLAGIARISM AND INTEGRITY CHECK — All manuscripts are screened using iThenticate (Turnitin) similarity detection software. Manuscripts with a similarity index above 15% (excluding references and direct quotations) are returned to authors for revision or rejected, depending on the severity of overlap.
3. DOUBLE-BLIND PEER REVIEW — Manuscripts passing initial screening are assigned to a minimum of two independent expert reviewers with demonstrated expertise in the relevant field. Reviewers are selected from the journal's international reviewer pool and are required to declare any conflicts of interest.
4. EDITORIAL DECISION — On receipt of reviewer reports, the handling editor issues one of the following decisions: Accept; Minor Revision; Major Revision; Reject. All decisions are communicated with detailed reviewer feedback.
5. REVISION AND FINAL ACCEPTANCE — Authors required to revise must submit a point-by-point response to reviewer comments and a tracked-changes manuscript within the specified timeframe. Final acceptance is at the discretion of the Editor-in-Chief following satisfactory revision.
EDSJ targets a first-decision turnaround of approximately 21 days from submission. The journal does not permit appeals against desk rejection decisions based on scope, but authors may appeal a rejection based on peer review by submitting a formal written response to the Editor-in-Chief.

PLAGIARISM POLICY
EDSJ has a zero-tolerance policy for plagiarism in any form, including self-plagiarism. All manuscripts are screened using iThenticate (powered by Turnitin) prior to peer review. The acceptable similarity threshold is 15% of total text content, excluding references, quoted material, and common phrases. Manuscripts exceeding this threshold are returned to authors without peer review. Discovery of plagiarism at any stage — including post-publication — will result in immediate rejection or retraction, as appropriate.

PUBLICATION ETHICS AND MALPRACTICE STATEMENT
EDSJ is committed to maintaining the highest standards of publication ethics in accordance with the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the DOAJ, and Scopus content selection criteria. All parties — authors, reviewers, editors, and the publisher — are expected to uphold these standards.
AUTHORS are required to ensure that submitted work is entirely original; that all sources are properly cited; that any potential conflicts of interest are disclosed; that all named authors have substantially contributed to the work; that ethical approval has been obtained where required; and that the use of any AI-assisted writing tools is declared.
REVIEWERS are required to treat all manuscripts as confidential; to declare any conflicts of interest before accepting a review assignment; to provide objective, constructive, and evidence-based reviews; and to alert the editor to any suspected misconduct or duplicate submission.
EDITORS are required to make decisions based solely on scholarly merit, independent of commercial, personal, or political considerations; to maintain reviewer confidentiality; to handle all correspondence regarding submitted manuscripts confidentially; and to act promptly upon any reported ethical concern.
The following forms of misconduct are strictly prohibited and will be investigated according to COPE flowcharts: plagiarism; data fabrication or falsification; duplicate submission or publication; undisclosed conflicts of interest; undisclosed AI authorship; gift authorship; and manipulation of peer review.

EDITORIAL ETHICS AND INDEPENDENCE
The editorial decisions of EDSJ are made solely on the basis of scholarly merit, originality, and relevance to the journal's scope. No external commercial, financial, or personal interest influences editorial decisions. The editorial board operates independently of the publisher, ESA Research, with respect to all decisions regarding manuscript acceptance or rejection. The Editor-in-Chief has final authority over all editorial decisions and this authority is not subject to override by the publisher for commercial reasons.

PRIVACY AND DATA HANDLING POLICY
EDSJ collects and processes personal data solely for the purposes of manuscript management, editorial communication, peer review, and journal administration. The journal complies with applicable data protection regulations, including the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) (Regulation (EU) 2016/679).
DATA COLLECTED: Name, institutional affiliation, email address, ORCID iD, country, and submission-related information provided by authors, reviewers, and registered users.
LEGAL BASIS FOR PROCESSING: Data is processed on the basis of (a) the performance of the publication contract; (b) legitimate interests in operating a peer-reviewed academic journal; and (c) consent, where explicitly given.
DATA USE: Personal data is used exclusively for journal operations. It is never sold, rented, or shared with third parties for commercial purposes. Data may be shared with CrossRef for DOI registration, with indexing services for bibliographic record creation, and with manuscript processing platforms as necessary for journal operations.
DATA RETENTION: Personal data is retained for as long as is necessary for the stated purpose and for a period of seven years thereafter, unless deletion is requested.

DIGITAL PRESERVATION AND ARCHIVING
EDSJ employs a robust, multi-layered digital preservation strategy to ensure the permanent safeguarding of the scholarly record. All published content is:
— Assigned a permanent Digital Object Identifier (DOI) via CrossRef, ensuring stable, citation-ready linking independent of URL changes
— Stored across redundant, geographically distributed servers with continuous automated backup
— Submitted to LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) for distributed preservation across a global network of libraries
— Submitted to CLOCKSS (Controlled LOCKSS) for community-governed dark-archive preservation
— Preserved in the Public Knowledge Project (PKP) Preservation Network (PN), which provides OJS-native archiving for all published issues

RETRACTION, CORRECTION, AND EXPRESSION OF CONCERN POLICY
EDSJ is committed to maintaining the integrity of the scholarly record in full accordance with COPE Retraction Guidelines. Post-publication actions are taken when necessary and are always handled transparently, with clear documentation published on the journal website and communicated to all relevant indexing databases.
CORRECTIONS (ERRATA / CORRIGENDA): Issued for minor errors in a published article that do not affect the conclusions. Correction notices are published with a link to the original article. If the error was introduced by the editorial team, a Corrigendum is published; if introduced by the authors, an Erratum is published.
EXPRESSIONS OF CONCERN: Issued when the editors have received credible evidence of a serious problem with a published article that warrants investigation but where a final determination has not yet been made. An Expression of Concern remains in place until the investigation is resolved.
RETRACTIONS: Issued when a published article is found to contain major errors that invalidate its conclusions, to contain plagiarised or fabricated data, or to have been published in violation of ethical standards. Retracted articles are retained on the website and clearly watermarked as RETRACTED, with a retraction notice stating the reason.
REMOVALS: In rare legal circumstances (e.g., defamation, court order, violation of personal privacy), an article may be removed from the journal website entirely. In such cases a notice explaining why the article has been removed is published in its place.

COMPLAINTS AND APPEALS PROCEDURE
EDSJ takes all complaints and appeals seriously and handles them in accordance with COPE guidelines.
APPEALS AGAINST REJECTION: Authors who believe their manuscript has been rejected in error may submit a formal appeal in writing to the Editor-in-Chief at [YOUR-EDITORIAL-EMAIL] within 30 days of the rejection decision. Appeals must include a detailed point-by-point rebuttal of the reviewer comments. Appeals based solely on disagreement with reviewer opinions, without substantive scientific argument, will not be considered. The Editor-in-Chief's decision on appeal is final.

CALL FOR SPECIAL ISSUES
EDSJ welcomes proposals for Special Issues on focused topics within data science, AI, and analytics. Special Issues are guest-edited by one or two recognised experts in the relevant field and undergo the same rigorous double-blind peer review as regular submissions.
Proposals should include: (1) a proposed title and 300-word rationale; (2) names and affiliations of proposed guest editors; (3) a draft call for papers; (4) proposed submission and publication timeline.
