Cross-border payments are an intrinsic part of the global economy, supported by a complex network of banks and financial institutions that enable multisecond to multiday transactions guided by static APIs. Calls to improve this state of affairs abound, yet prevailing modernization approaches offer limited benefit. Leveraging concepts such as digital identifiers and tokenization, changes to payment messages or settlement mechanisms are proposed as improvements. Autonomous financial agents are presented to provide a different perspective on the problem by operating across silos and on a transaction-by-transaction basis. Agent-based cross-border payment orchestration utilizes individuals as digital tokens of the services they offer; service availability, conditions, and costs are negotiated; and transactions are managed from initiation to settlement. The benefits of such orchestration rest on valuable improvements but the completion of the template raises concerns that warrant consideration.
Establishing a trade-off between minimization of overall latency and easy verification of compliance with regulations and service-level agreements calls for the design of a sound initiation-and-negotiation protocol. The lifecycle from transaction initiation to settlement of the payload causes certain parts of processes undertaken by agents functioning as service gateways to be inferred by interacting agents rather than exchanged through interaction. Future research discussion should encompass the development of an appropriate transaction-mechanism capacity for agents, regular measurement of latency and overall transactional activity in the current architecture, and the real or perceived risks of abuse in agent-based orchestration. Addressing these issues would facilitate further deployment of agents in financial services while serving preparation for their use in the payment space.
