Abstract

Automation and monitoring can be performed based on different smart levels and configurations, from human-controlled machines performing repetitive tasks to self-organizing networks of machines automatically reacting in real time. Using the concept and supporting technology of distributed real-time cloud computing, the automation and monitoring service can be organized at any of the smart levels—from basic data acquisition to complex intelligent actions—by applying the corresponding sensing-to-action loops. The paradigm shifts from cloud-only to edge-cloud collaboration and finally to full real-time distributed execution may fulfill ever-increasing service demands for real-time distributed automation and monitoring supported by the Internet-of-Things (IoT) technology.

An Adaptive AI-Driven Cloud-Based IoT Framework for Real-Time Distributed Smart Automation and Monitoring is presented. It incorporates a broad and fine-grained definition of smart automation and monitoring, describes various levels of system configuration, and identifies a set of Cloud-Based IoT Architectural Principles. The overall framework is outlined, focusing on the Sensor Layer, Edge Nodes, Data Ingestion and Streaming, Edge-Cloud Collaboration, Adaptive Scheduling and Resource Allocation, and Security and Privacy Aspects along the development spectrum.
