Abstract

Physical security management in data center environments is becoming increasingly customer-centric, with providers offering self-service capabilities to reduce wait times and improve customer experience. However, this shift creates a dichotomy: greater autonomy for customers can also open the door to misuse, and distrust in the underlying technology may lead customers to deliberately circumvent security controls, undermining their effectiveness. This mismatch between customer trust and security assurance remains an underexplored area of research.
Artificial intelligence offers a path forward through personalized self-service and decision-support models, which have been shown to improve user experience while increasing trust and reliance on associated technologies elsewhere in the AI domain. This paper proposes extending that approach to physical security management in data centers by designing personalized self-service frameworks tailored to individual customer profiles. We first identify key personalization factors — such as age and technology experience level — and map them into a customized service framework. A user needs assessment, conducted through focus groups, then informs UI customizations that support self-service capabilities. The goal is a personalized approach to physical security self-service that enhances customer experience without compromising security.
