Abstract

Crime is a reflection of society and a key concern in the fields of sociology, criminology, psychology, urban planning, and local government. Urban crime mapping is a systematic approach to collecting and mapping crime incidents to identify hotspots for policy intervention. Crime mapping identifies the spatial distribution of crime as well as temporal trends, seasonality, and clustering, all of which inform local government policy. Using yearly crime data from the Patna Municipal Corporation and tools such as ArcGIS 10, GeoDA, QGIS, and R, this project maps crime distribution and highlights wards with increased crime risk. Serious crime typologies such as property crimes, violent crimes, and thefts are emphasized, with a particular focus on significant crime increases and ward concentration.

Crime is a reflection of society and a key concern in the fields of sociology, criminology, psychology, urban planning, and local government. Urban crime mapping is a systematic approach to collecting and mapping crime incidents to identify hotspots that require policy intervention. Crime mapping identifies the spatial distribution of crime, as well as temporal trends, seasonality, and clustering, all of which in turn inform local government policy. Using annual crime data from the Patna Municipal Corporation and tools such as ArcGIS 10, GeoDA, QGIS, and R, this study maps crime distribution and highlights wards with increased risk. Serious crime typologies—particularly property crimes, violent crimes, and thefts—are emphasized, with a specific focus on serious increases and concentration within certain wards.
